The online errata list can be found there on the World Wide Web at http://pdsimg.jpl.nasa.gov/ This file, ERRATA.TXT, contains release notes and errata concerning the MESSENGER MDIS Digital Elevation Model (DEM) archive. Section A of this file contains an entry for the MESSENGER release with general information about the contents of the release, in order from newest to oldest. There is only one release of the MDIS DEM products. Section B of this file contains general notes, if any, concerning the archive as a whole. ******** SECTION A ******** RELEASE NUMBER: 16 RELEASE DATE: 2017-05-12 DATA COVERAGE: 2011-03-29 to 2015-03-17 (Mercury Orbit, Mercury Orbit Year 2, Mercury Orbit Year 3, Mercury Orbit Year 4) PRODUCT TYPES RELEASED FOR THIS ARCHIVE: MDIS DLR DEM PRODUCT TYPES UPDATED FOR THIS ARCHIVE: MDIS DLR DEM JPEG2000 1. This release consists of three additional quadrangle-based DEM products provided by the German Aerospace Center (DLR). These cover the H03, H05, and H07 quadrangles. Additional DEM products covering the H03 and H05 quadrangles in lambert conformal map projection are provided. 2. The directory structure for the DEM products volume is slightly reorganized. Directories to contain the DLR quadrangle-based products are added. The following directories are added to the volume: DEM/QUAD/IMG DEM/QUAD/JPEG2000 EXTRAS/QUAD 3. The REGIONAL/JPEG2000 directory is removed from the volume. 4. The files MSGR_DEM_DLR_EQ_H06_DM_222_*_V01.* in the REGIONAL directories are replaced by MSGR_DEM_DLR_SC_H06_DM_222_*_V02.* in the new QUAD directories and renamed to indicate a simple cylindrical projection. The V01 IMG file of this set is not changed, only renamed. No changes are made to the directories containing the USGS and ASU DEMs. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- RELEASE NUMBER: October 2016 Update RELEASE DATE: 2016-12-01 DATA COVERAGE: 2011-03-29 to 2015-03-17 (Mercury Orbit, Mercury Orbit Year 2, Mercury Orbit Year 3, Mercury Orbit Year 4) PRODUCT TYPES RELEASED FOR THIS ARCHIVE: None PRODUCT TYPES UPDATED FOR THIS ARCHIVE: MDIS ASU DEM ASU DEMs 1. The ASU DEM products are reproduced using the mission approved PCK data with a Mercury radius of 2,439.4 km. These ASU DEMs completely supplant those from release 15. A few new ASU DEMs are included as well as the reproduced ones. 2. All ASU DEM products are assigned version 06 (V06) in this release so as to be clear that they supersede all earlier ones. 3. There is a change to the naming convention for the ASU DEM orthorectified images (orthophotos). Previously, multiple takes of each image were differentiated by the version numbers in the filenames and PRODUCT_IDs. Since this was not consistent with the meaning of the version numbers in the other products in the volume, the different takes of the orthorectified images are now distinguished by the product type field (characters 25-26) in the filenames and PRODUCT_IDs. What was previously "_OR_" is now "_O1_" or "_O2_" depending on the image. For example, MSGR_DEM_ASU_EQ_SANDR05_OR_160_I_V02 becomes MSGR_DEM_ASU_EQ_SANDR05_O2_160_I_V06. 4. There are now exactly two orthorectified images for each single stereo pair feature DEM product set (e.g., KERTS01) and one for each mosaic product set (e.g., KERTSMS). -------------------------------------------------------------------------- RELEASE NUMBER: September 2016 Update RELEASE DATE: 2016-09-01 DATA COVERAGE: 2011-03-29 to 2015-03-17 (Mercury Orbit, Mercury Orbit Year 2, Mercury Orbit Year 3, Mercury Orbit Year 4) PRODUCT TYPES RELEASED FOR THIS ARCHIVE: None PRODUCT TYPES UPDATED FOR THIS ARCHIVE: MDIS USGS DEM 1. This is an update to the USGS global and polar DEMs delivered in MESSENGER PDS release 15. A preliminary version of the USGS global DEM (MSGR_DEM_USG_SC_I_V01.IMG) was inadvertently released in the May 6, 2016 release to the public. The new version 2 data products included in this release update are the correct versions corresponding to the DEM that was used to create all the cartographic maps in the May 6, 2016 PDS release. The main difference in the USGS DEM version 2 products provided in this update is they are derived using a 1-sigma filter applied to the point cloud when processing each output pixel. Version 1 did not have this filter applied. It has been confirmed that version 2 of the USGS DEM was used in the derivation of MDIS and MASCS map products where it is indicated that the USGS DEM was used in the creation of those products. None of those products are affected by this release. 2. Version 1 of the USGS polar DEM products (MSGR_DEM_USG_NP_I_V01.IMG and MSGR_DEM_USG_SP_I_V01.IMG), were derived (i.e., projected) from the version 1 of the USGS global DEM. Version 2 of both the USGS north and south polar DEM products are independently derived using the same technique as the Version 2 USGS global DEM. 3. The USGS global DEM label keyword DATA_SET_MAP_PROJECTION refers to the DEM_EQU_MAP.CAT catalog file describing the Equirectangular projection. However, it should be noted that the Simple Cylindrical projection used in this Version 2 global DEM is compatible with the Equirectangular projection with a center latitude of projection of 0 (zero), and therefore applies to this DEM. 4. The EXTRAS/ISIS products have been updated to be consistent with version 2 of the USGS DEMs. Additional detached ISIS labels have been added to provide radius values (MSGR_DEM_USG__I_V02.IMG.radius.lbl) in addition to labels providing elevations (MSGR_DEM_USGS__I_V02.IMG.lbl). is the type of projection, simple cylindrical (SC), North polar stereographic (NP), or south polar stereographic (SP). See EXTRAS/EXTRINFO.TXT for instructions on how to create an ISIS-compatible DEM product that can be used a shape model for Mercury. 5. The following products are redelivered and replace the V01 versions provided in release 15: DEM/GLOBAL/IMG/MSGR_DEM_USG_SC_I_V02 DEM/GLOBAL/JPEG200/MSGR_DEM_USG_SC_J_V02 DEM/POLAR/IMG/MSGR_DEM_USG_NP_I_V02 DEM/POLAR/IMG/MSGR_DEM_USG_SP_I_V02 DEM/POLAR/JPEG2000/MSGR_DEM_USG_NP_J_V02 DEM/POLAR/JPEG2000/MSGR_DEM_USG_SP_J_V02 All products in the EXTRAS/ISIS/ directory: DEM/EXTRAS/ISIS/MSGR_DEM_USG_SC_I_V02.* DEM/EXTRAS/ISIS/MSGR_DEM_USG_NP_I_V02.* DEM/EXTRAS/ISIS/MSGR_DEM_USG_SP_I_V02.* Note that the following products are unchanged and not redelivered in this release: DEM/GLOBAL/IMG/MSGR_DEM_USG_SC_C_V01 DEM/GLOBAL/IMG/MSGR_DEM_USG_SC_S_V01 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- RELEASE NUMBER: 15 RELEASE DATE: 2016-05-06 DATA COVERAGE: 2011-03-29 to 2015-03-17 (Mercury Orbit, Mercury Orbit Year 2, Mercury Orbit Year 3, Mercury Orbit Year 4) PRODUCT TYPES RELEASED FOR THIS ARCHIVE: MDIS DEM PRODUCT TYPES UPDATED FOR THIS ARCHIVE: None 1. This is the first release for this volume. As of the time of this delivery, no additional releases are planned. 2. ASU DEMs PCK Many, but not all, of the ASU DEMs were produced using an older version of the SPICE PCK. Therefore, those products will differ in their geographic registration from the other DEMs. 41 out of the 58 ASU DEMs (*_DM_*.IMG) included in this delivery were generated using the older PCK with radius of 2,440 km. The remaining 17 DEMs included in this delivery were generated using the newer project designated PCK with planetary radius of 2,439.4 km. One can determine which of the products were produced using the older PCK (using the 2,440 km radius) and which the project designated PCK by looking at the planetary radii fields (*_AXIS_RADIUS) in their labels. The products with this issue are: MSGR_DEM_ASU_EQ_KERTS01_DM_100_I_V01 MSGR_DEM_ASU_EQ_KERTS02_DM_100_I_V01 MSGR_DEM_ASU_EQ_KERTSMS_DM_100_I_V01 MSGR_DEM_ASU_EQ_PARMR01_DM_450_I_V01 MSGR_DEM_ASU_EQ_SANDR01_DM_100_I_V01 MSGR_DEM_ASU_EQ_SANDR02_DM_100_I_V01 MSGR_DEM_ASU_EQ_SANDR03_DM_150_I_V01 MSGR_DEM_ASU_EQ_SANDR04_DM_90_I_V01 MSGR_DEM_ASU_EQ_SANDR05_DM_150_I_V01 MSGR_DEM_ASU_EQ_SANDR06_DM_100_I_V01 MSGR_DEM_ASU_EQ_SANDR07_DM_100_I_V01 MSGR_DEM_ASU_EQ_SANDR08_DM_150_I_V01 MSGR_DEM_ASU_EQ_SANDR09_DM_90_I_V01 MSGR_DEM_ASU_EQ_SANDR10_DM_90_I_V01 MSGR_DEM_ASU_EQ_SANDR11_DM_150_I_V01 MSGR_DEM_ASU_EQ_SANDR12_DM_90_I_V01 MSGR_DEM_ASU_EQ_SANDR13_DM_90_I_V01 MSGR_DEM_ASU_EQ_SANDR14_DM_150_I_V01 MSGR_DEM_ASU_EQ_SANDR15_DM_150_I_V01 MSGR_DEM_ASU_EQ_SANDR16_DM_150_I_V01 MSGR_DEM_ASU_EQ_SANDR17_DM_150_I_V01 MSGR_DEM_ASU_EQ_SANDR18_DM_100_I_V01 MSGR_DEM_ASU_EQ_SANDR19_DM_150_I_V01 MSGR_DEM_ASU_EQ_SANDR20_DM_150_I_V01 MSGR_DEM_ASU_EQ_SANDR21_DM_100_I_V01 MSGR_DEM_ASU_EQ_SANDR22_DM_100_I_V01 MSGR_DEM_ASU_EQ_SANDR23_DM_100_I_V01 MSGR_DEM_ASU_EQ_SANDR24_DM_150_I_V01 MSGR_DEM_ASU_EQ_SANDR25_DM_160_I_V01 MSGR_DEM_ASU_EQ_SANDR26_DM_100_I_V01 MSGR_DEM_ASU_EQ_SANDR27_DM_150_I_V01 MSGR_DEM_ASU_EQ_SANDR28_DM_150_I_V01 MSGR_DEM_ASU_EQ_SANDR29_DM_90_I_V01 MSGR_DEM_ASU_EQ_SANDR30_DM_150_I_V01 MSGR_DEM_ASU_EQ_SANDR31_DM_90_I_V01 MSGR_DEM_ASU_EQ_SANDR32_DM_90_I_V01 MSGR_DEM_ASU_EQ_SANDR33_DM_90_I_V01 MSGR_DEM_ASU_EQ_SANDR34_DM_90_I_V01 MSGR_DEM_ASU_EQ_SANDR35_DM_90_I_V01 MSGR_DEM_ASU_EQ_SANDR36_DM_90_I_V01 MSGR_DEM_ASU_EQ_SANDRMS_DM_150_I_V01 3. ASU DEM Mission Phases and Start/Stop Times The ASU DEMs were generated using data variously collected during the Mercury Orbit through Mercury Orbit Year 4 mission phases. Their labels do not contain MISSION_PHASE_NAME because as regional products, the different products contain data collected at different phases. For the same reasons, the ASU DEM labels contain values of "N/A" in their START_TIME and STOP_TIME fields as time values would not be particularly meaningful. If interested, one may ascertain information about the source data products that were used to create the DEMs from the corresponding MSGR_DEM_ASU_EQ_*_RM_*_S_V.TXT files located in the EXTRAS/REGIONAL/ directory. 4. ASU GeoTIFF Products The EXTRAS/REGIONAL directory contains GeoTIFF products (*.TIF) provided by ASU that correspond to their official DEM products. They can be associated with the primary products by their file names and the PRODUCT_IDs in their labels. These are accompanied by PDS label files. PDS standards do not require label files for products in the EXTRAS directory and do not support the TIFF format in any case, except with documents. So these labels are not truly functional PDS labels. However, they contain useful information about the GeoTIFF products in a form that would be familiar to users of the primary products, so they are included as supporting information. 5. DLR DEM There is only one DLR DEM. It covers the H06 "Kuiper" quadrangle [GREELY&BATSON1990], which includes the Hun Kal crater used as a reference point in the Mercury coordinate system. This is mainly due to the volume of data used in processing. For this quadrangle about 7,500 images are used and 5.6 billion object points were created. 6. USGS DEMs The USGS global and polar JPEG 2000 format DEMs are accompanied by XML files that are useful for GDAL-compatible readers. However, the PDS file naming convention does not allow for filenames directly useable by GDAL as the former dictates a name such as JP2filename_JP2_AUX.XML, but the latter expects JP2filename.jp2.aux.xml. The end user will have to rename the XML files to make them useable by most readers. ******** SECTION B ******** This section is provided for general notes concerning the archive as a whole. So far there are no general errors or notes to report.
