Undefined Keywords The following new keywords were found to be missing from the Operations EDR and Camera RDR Data Product SIS, and subsequently the PDS Data Dictionary, even though they may appear in Operations and Science Data Products. They are intended to be submitted to the PDS as soon as possible. COMMAND_INSTRUMENT_ID: Not in data dictionary INST_DECOMP_STAGES: Not in data dictionary SOFTWARE_LANGUAGE: Not in data dictionary SOFTWARE_MODULE_NAME: Not in data dictionary SOFTWARE_MODULE_TYPE: Not in data dictionary NUM_SOFTWARE_KEYWORDS: Not in data dictionary RESPONSIVITY_CONSTANTS: Not in data dictionary BIAS_COEFFS_FILE: Not in data dictionary FLAT_FIELD_FILE: Not in data dictionary REFERENCE_PIXEL_IMAGE: Not in data dictionary DARK_CURRENT_FILE: Not in data dictionary INPUT_IMAGE: Not in data dictionary TELEMETRY_SOURCE_NAME: Not in data dictionary 2. Non-compliant Values for PDS Keyword Elements i) The PDS keyword element, SOLAR_AZIMUTH, has an allowable range of -180 to 180 degrees. However, the MER products use a range from 0.0 to 359.99 ii) The PDS keyword element, INSTRUMENT_ID, in the Hazcam product labels contains values for the four individual Hazcams that are too long. They should be 12 characters or less. This will possibly be fixed in future data releases. iii) The PDS keyword elements, INSTRUMENT_ID and INSTRUMENT_NAME, contain more possible values for the individual cameras pertaining to one instrument than are called out in the instrument catalog files. Consideration is being given as to whether camera differentiation should be reduced in the labels since the filename incorporates this information already. 3. Non-compliant Keywords The following PDS non-compliant keywords appear in the labels of Pancam Science EDR products. Due to their uniqueness and the possibility of breaking current processing software, were they to be changed, there is no intention of ever adding them to the PDS Data Dictionary. However, they are defined in the the data product SIS. Missing Keyword Value The keyword element, DERIVED_IMAGE_TYPE, is missing a value in some RDR labels for sols 31-90. This problem does not appear in any sol 1-30 products or in sol 31-90 OPGS EDR products, for both Spirit and Opportunity. The problem is limited to "Ops" single-frame RDRs (not "Ops" EDRs), and exists for a subset of RDR types for ALL camera data (Front Haz, Rear Haz, Navcam, Pancam) for Sols 1-90. Since the "Science" RDRs are derived from "Science" EDRs, which are derived from "Ops" EDRs, which do NOT have this problem ... all "Science" products are good. Only "Ops" RDRs are affected. DERIVED_IMAGE_TYPE is only informational and missing values should not impact the analysis of data in any way, since the same info can be derived smartly elsewhere in the label, however, missing values does violate PDS standards. Data products will be replaced as they become available after reprocessing. 5. Description of Problem/Failure M. Maimone 2 Feb 2005: When performing autonav driving using NAVCAMs, images are typically acquired in HWSW binned mode to save data volume and computation time. Images are maintained in a ring buffer, the HAFIQ queue, ready to be converted into data products either on command or whenever a motion error occurs. The problem is, the H and V components of the camera model inside those HWSW images are incorrect. So any tool that attempts to perform stereo matching on the images will fail, because the camera models will be incorrect. Reporting Location: JPL 317-Sandbox [B317D] Problem/Failure Noted During: Acceptance [A1] Specific Environment: Procedure: Revision: Paragraph: VERIFICATION Verification and Analysis: M. Maimone 2 Feb 2005: Verified by inspecting /proj/mer-sstb1/2004/12/10/sstb1_t8_1d_mer2_1_tzeroXband.04.345.095049- product/023/ and 024/ data products using merdpimgidph to compare camera models. Comparing good 128x128 camera models against bad 256x256 models, the interesting differences are: 199,204c199,204 < cmodel.h[0] = -82.1886 < cmodel.h[1] = 137.782 < cmodel.h[2] = 35.7813 < cmodel.v[0] = -21.1646 < cmodel.v[1] = -24.9347 < cmodel.v[2] = 161.351 --- > cmodel.h[0] = -657.509 > cmodel.h[1] = 1102.26 > cmodel.h[2] = 286.25 > cmodel.v[0] = -10.5823 > cmodel.v[1] = -12.4673 > cmodel.v[2] = 80.6753 CR#1076 in nav_main.cc implemented a change to correct this problem for HAZCAM-acquired images, but that change assumes a HAZCAM CCD orientation, which doesn't work for NAVCAMs whose CCDs are mounted 90 degrees off from the HAZCAM orientation. That is, given images acquired in HWSW mode, the CR#1076 code in nav_main.cc assumes that it must be the number of columns that is reduced from 1024 to 256, but in the NAVCAMs it is the number of rows. Hence the resulting camera models are off by a factor of 4 (h[] is 4 times too large, v[] is 4 times too small). Although this is an annoying problem because it will affect any tool that tries to correlate these data products, it can be worked around fairly easily. The flight software never generates anything onboard using these camera models, so there is no impact to the FSW. Most MIPL tools do not use the camera models store in the image header, but rather refer to calibration parameters stored separately on the ground, so most post-processing will not be affected. It is only the archival process that will be affected, because the H and V vectors in the camera models will be incorrect. The correct values are easily recoverable, simply by multiply/dividing by a factor of 4. But the discrepancy should be noted. The way to tell that this problem exists is to compute the image center from the CAVHOR camera model parameters. If it differs by the appropriate amount from the actual image center (by a factor of 4), then you know it was due to this bug. Cause of Problem/Failure: Software [C] Person Completing This Section: Mark MAimone Date: 02/02/2005 PART DATA Piece Part Name Part # Serial # FA Log # Circuit Desig. Mfr. Code Defect CORRECTIVE ACTION Corrective Action Taken: M. Maimone 2 Feb 2005: Although this is an annoying problem, it does not impact rover flight operations, only archival ground processing. No change required for R9-1 software release, it's been present in the software all along. 02/03/2005, J. Snyder. The identified problem has been present at least since R9.0, and does not impact on-board operations, as described above. Therefore, in order to complete R9.1 development, the request to make a code change in R9.1 has beed disapproved (by J. Snyder). Ready to close with no further action. 6. Solar Elevation in Science RAD and RAT Pancam Products, April 18, 2005. Differences in values for SOLAR_AZIMUTH and SOLAR_ELEVATION when comparing EDRs on the nominal Ops OSS vs the Archive OSS show that: a) The numbers after the decimal are changed slightly. b) Sometimes the sign (+/-) is different. Regarding a), MIPL/OPGS' processing uses a version of SPICE kernals that have been refined over the time passed since MER landed in January '04. So, the changes in values (mostly to the right of the decimal) are accepted as improved due to the improved navigation performed by NAIF. Regarding b), a while back a bug was discovered in MIPL's telemetry processor that flipped the +/- sign in SOLAR_ELEVATION. The bug was fixed and the "fixed" version of MERTELEMPROC has been used during MIPL's reprocessing for the PDS archive. This data ends up on the Archive OSS. The "fixed" version has NOT yet been used for nominal processing for daily operations, because of the risk that software developed by other elements of the MER GDS might break if the SOLAR_ELEVATION sign were to suddenly flip again (although technically, it would be correct). This data ends up on the Ops OSS. MIPL is close to delivering the "fixed" version of its telemproc for use in the nominal operations environment, but not before all science users are polled to assess risk. In summation, the reprocessed EDRs on the Archive OSS contain improved values for SOLAR_AZIMUTH and SOLAR_ELEVATION versus their counterparts on the Ops OSS, given the "refinement" in SPICE kernals and bug fix in MIPL's telemproc affecting the +/- sign in SOLAR_ELEVATION. 7. Non-compliant keyword value, April 18, 2005. There are instances where the value for the keyword element, SAMPLE_BIT_MASK, does not follow the normal format: 2#0000111111111111#, has been used without the "2#" and "#". Here are some examples: 2F136402205RSD3712R2502L0M1.IMG: SAMPLE_BIT_MASK = 0000111111111111 ---------------------------------------- 2F136402205RSD3712R2502R0M1.IMG: SAMPLE_BIT_MASK = 0000111111111111 ---------------------------------------- 2F136402205RSL3712R2502L0M1.IMG: SAMPLE_BIT_MASK = 0000111111111111 ---------------------------------------- 2F136402205RSL3712R2502R0M1.IMG: SAMPLE_BIT_MASK = 0000111111111111 8. "partial" EDRs on Ops & Archive OSS's, August 15, 2005 A discrepancy exists in the TELEMETRY_SOURCE_NAME keyword value, comparing the Ops OSS version of an EDR versus the Archive OSS version of the same EDR. As a reminder, keyword TELEMETRY_SOURCE_NAME contains the filename of the raw telemetry data product (DP) that MIPL processes into an EDR (Level 0 product). A DP can be "partial" (which can be versioned) or "full", yielding EDRs with partial (ie., with "holes") or full coverage. RULE: The DP file identified by keyword TELEMETRY_SOURCE_NAME in the Ops EDR label should be the same as that identified in the Archive EDR label. So, based ONLY on comparison of the TELEMETRY_SOURCE_NAME value found in the labels of the Ops EDRs and Archive EDRs, the differences are provided in the following table: "Ops" Source DP vs "Archive" Source DP (comparing TELEMETRY_SOURCE_NAME) SCENARIO Source DP for Source DP for EDR TOTAL EDR on Ops OSS on Archive OSS CASES -------- --------------- ---------------------- ===== 1 ".dat" ".pdat" 6 2 ".pdat" ".dat" 232 3 ".pdat" higher version ".pdat" 2 4 ".pdat" lower version ".pdat" 49 Resolution of Scenarios #1 and #4 resulted in a bug fix in one of the MIPL tools used for archiving. Resolution of Scenarios #2 and #3 is still incomplete. An ISA (Incident Surprise Anomaly) report has been written against the core software ("mer_dp") used by MDOT to generate telemetry data products from the raw packets. However, we're not convinced that "mer_dp" is at fault, but the investigation needs to begin somewhere. The problem is peculiar in that it pertains only to MER-A data. Here are 4 lists of files, each named for the applicable Scenario. Erroneous keyword element values for Release 7, February 3, 2006. Some labels contain values like "inf.0" and "nan.0", sometimes in quotation marks, sometimes not. Examples: MODEL_COMPONENT_2 = ("-3.06154e-11", inf.0, "-inf.0") INSTRUMENT_AZIMUTH = nan.0 The "inf" string denotes "infinity" and is a standard method in C code to handle very large exponential numbers. The very large numbers are erroneous, and they are a result of telemetry packet header (IDPH) corruption. An option to consider, if attempting to correct these values, is to use adjacent (time-wise) products that may have valid MODEL_COMPONENT_n values. The following is a listing of affected files. Empty keyword element values for Release 8, April 27, 2006. The following Pancam EDRs have keyword element values that are empty. There may be more. Usually, this results from malformed PDS labels due to corrupt IDPH. MIPL has confirmed that this data was reprocessed to the fullest extent (using trailing IDPH, fixing filenames, some label items) prior to handoff to the Pancam team and concluded that it was due to a flight software (FSW) bug. The problem is the (apparent) inability for MIPL's telemproc software to handle the cases when a keyword is valueless. One possible solution that MIPL is exploring is filling in a value with ("NONE", "NULL", "UNK", "N/A"). 1P178978022ETH5984P2618R4M1.IMG 1P179765198ETH6000P2456L2M1.IMG 1P183401253ERP63IRP2805L1M1.IMG 13. Rover Motion Counter (RMC) bit errors, February 12, 2007. Some RMC values are not always the same for every product type of a given product. For Operations and Archiving, MIPL only supports correction to a few keywords to maintain status quo, and specific to the RMC keywords only supports Site and Position indices. So, there will be NO correction to these such files. Systematic minor errors in MER Pancam and MI labels, August 30, 2007. a.) In Pancam and MI EDR and RDR labels, the value for PRODUCT_CREATION_TIME has a single digit for the date when it's less than 10. Example: 2007-07-2. It should be 2007-07-02. b.) In Pancam RDR labels, the value for LOCAL_TRUE_SOLAR_TIME is missing the surrounding quotation marks. 15. Extraneous space characters, April 8, 2008. MER product 2N246215873INNAVLRF0006L0M1.IMG has an extraneous space characters in the PDS keyword, INST_CMPRS_SEGMENTS. This product is part of MER Release 16. Example: GROUP = REFERENCE_PIXEL_REQUEST_PARMS SOURCE_ID = "NAV COMMANDED" GROUP_APPLICABILITY_FLAG = FALSE DOWNLOAD_PRIORITY = 70 INST_CMPRS_MODE = 1 INST_CMPRS_RATE = 12.0 INST_CMPRS_QUALITY = 0 INST_CMPRS_FILTER = E INST_DECOMP_STAGES = 3 INST _CMPRS_SEGMENTS = 1 END_GROUP = REFERENCE_PIXEL_REQUEST_PARMS 16. Missing bytes, May 1, 2008. Pancam product 2P245057283MRLAVEFP2598L6M1.IMG has fewer bytes than specified in the attached label. 17. Missing Keyword value for RELEASE_ID, June 12, 2008. The label keyword RELEASE_ID was not correctly updated for the Volume 16 (Sols 1261-1350) data products generated by OPGS. It should have a value of "0016", but instead has a value of "". 18. Terrain Mesh label inconsistency, Volume 21 and 22, August 19, 2009. The MER Terrain Meshes being archived have a dual label that fits the following 2 file types: a) ".pfb" b) ".ht" An inconsistency exists with 4 keywords that are in the Mesh dual label for all Archive volumes: START_TIME STOP_TIME SPACECRAFT_CLOCK_START_COUNT SPACECRAFT_CLOCK_STOP_COUNT The above Start/Stop pairs should have all been determined in the same manner, but they are not. The START_TIME/STOP_TIME are correctly determined across the range of all input XYZs. However, the SPACECRAFT_CLOCK_START_COUNT/ SPACECRAFT_CLOCK_STOP_COUNT are incorrectly determined only from the last input XYZ. For the upcoming MER-B Archive Terrain Mesh delivery (v21) we came across an issue regarding some special products MIPL generated. MIPL developed a special mask for some of the pancam images during the same period that v21 covers. While we were in the testing phase, we were manually adding these products to the OPS OSS under specially named subdirectories. Because we generated these in a private area, some of the special meshes have the same name as their automatically generated brothers. Since we cannot grow the Archive subdirectories the same way we do the OPS subdirectories we were forced to rename the meshes so there would not be a collision between the standard products and our special products on the Archive OSS. This affects only Pancam and Navcam-Pancam combo meshes and archive volumes 21 and 22. The method that we came up with is to subtract 1 from the sol in the filename and place the mesh, and associated files, in the corresponding mesh directory. So for example, a mesh found in the OPS 1800 directory and named 1mesh_1800_PN_105_FFL_127_v1 would be placed in the archive 1799 directory and renamed 1mesh_1799_PN_105_FFL_127_v1. There were 8 special meshes (3 sols) that we applied this method to, they are listed below. "Special Processing" on RDR data products for MER-B Archive Volume 22, September 15, 2009. Beginning with MER-B Sol 1793, Pancam images were processed with "hot pixel" masks and despiked to remove camera noise during the Inverse Lookup (ILUT) RDR generation. This process was performed manually during operations thru Sol 1818. Thereafter, the processing was integrated into the OPGS Pipeline and performed automatically. Note that this Archive Volume contains data that underwent the noise removal processing for only data acquired on Sol 1801 and later. Data from earlier Sols (1793-1800) that underwent the same noise removal processing are not included in the Archive Volume, as it is beyond the resources of the product provider to reprocess those data. 20.
