Additional documents included on this volume provide more details, especially the "CATALOG/*.cat" files describing the LCROSS instruments and the datasets produced by them. This volume contains all data collected from instruments onboard the LCROSS Shepherding Spacecraft during its four month mission. See the file "mission.cat" in the "/CATALOG" directory for a description of the mission and the file "insthost.cat" in the same directory for a description of the spacecraft. Since the purpose of this mission was to observe the impact of a centaur launch stage in a permanently shadowed region of the moon, the most interesting data generated by LCROSS was received just before and after that impact. This data is contained in the 20091009113022_IMPACT directory. File Formats ============ All text documents and other meta information files such as descriptions, PDS object definitions and detached PDS labels are stream format files, with a carriage return (ASCII 13) and a line feed character (ASCII 10) at the end of the record. This allows the files to be read by MS-DOS/Windows, Unix, and MacOS operating systems. Data from the LCROSS instruments consist of images, spectra, and housekeeping data. Raw (as received) images are provided as PDS-formatted binary files with detached labels. PDS-formatted images can be read by NASAVIEW (see http://pds.jpl.nasa.gov/tools/software_download.cfm). Radiometricly calibrated images with labels are also provided in PDS format for the infrared and near-infrared cameras. No calibration was done for the visible light 'context' camera. As a convenience, both raw and calibrated images are also provided in FITS format in the EXTRAS directory. These files are organized with directories and filenames to match the PDS-formatted images, however, no labels are supplied. The labels for the corresponding PDS-formatted images are applicable. Most spectra are supplied as ascii tables, one file per spectra with a detached label. These .TAB files are compliant comma-separated value (CSV) files and can be loaded into MS Excel or other tools accordingly. Spectra generated by the near infrared spectrometers in their high-speed, low-resolution or 'flash' mode are also provided as in ascii tables, but grouped by instrument power cycle, that is, each of these tables contains all spectra captured during a single power cycle. Volume Contents =============== Files on this volume are organized into a set of subdirectories below the top-level directory. The table below shows the structure and content of these directories. In the table, directory names are enclosed in square brackets ([]). See the "*info.txt" files in each top-level directory for specific information on the files in the directory, including naming schemes. The [DATA] directory contains the images and spectra. Below [DATA] are directories containing images and spectra collected during each instrument activity period during the mission. The last directory contains data from all instruments starting one minute before the centaur impacted through the end of the mission five minutes later. Partitioning the data first by time separates the data relevant to the centaur impact from data useful for instrument calibration and other purposes. Within each of these directories, data is partitioned by instrument and then by type, e.g., raw vs calibrated.
