LUNAR ORBITER 1-5 EXPERIMENT DATA RECORD ARCHIVE


1. Introduction

   This document provides an overview of the Lunar Orbiters 1 through 5 
   Experiment Data Record Archive volume, including a summary of the volume 
   contents.
   
   The Lunar Orbiter Image Recovery Project (LOIRP) Lunar Orbiter archive is
   a dataset derived from the original Deep Space Network (DSN) Deep Space 
   Station (DSS) Ampex FR-900 magnetic tapes, presently archived at the NASA 
   Ames Research Center from the photography of the Lunar Orbiter 1 through 5
   missions.

      Launched August 10, 1966
      
   Lunar Orbiter 2
      Launched November 6, 1966
      
   Lunar Orbiter 3
      Launched February 5, 1967
      
   Lunar Orbiter 4
      Launched May 4, 1967
      
   Lunar Orbiter 5
      Launched August 1, 1967


2. File Formats

   The data files are presented in the PDS3 format.


3. Volume Contents

   Files on this volume are organized into a set of subdirectories
   underlying the top-level root directory. The LO archive volume includes 
   the following files and directories.

   Root directory
      AAREADME.TXT - the file you are reading
      ERRATA.TXT   - notes and errata, if any
      VOLDESC.CAT  - volume description for the PDS catalog

   CATALOG directory
      CATINFO.TXT  - description of contents of this directory
      *.CAT        - descriptions of datasets, instruments, spacecraft,
                     mission, personnel and references for the PDS catalog

   DATA directory
      Data files are grouped into Lunar Orbiter number in subdirectories, and
      then further broken down by frame number

   DOCUMENT directory
      DOCINFO.TXT  - description of contents of this directory
      LO_SIS.docx  - LO Data Product Software Interface Specification (SIS)
      LO_LDD.full  - Lunar Orbiter Local Data Dictionary file
