PDS_VERSION_ID = PDS3 RECORD_TYPE = STREAM OBJECT = TEXT NOTE = "Comments on Mars Odyssey Thermal Emission Imaging System (THEMIS) online data release (ERRATA.TXT)" PUBLICATION_DATE = 2020-10-01 END_OBJECT = TEXT END COMMENTS ON ODY THEMIS ONLINE DATA RELEASE This document contains comments and errata concerning the online data release of the Mars Odyssey Thermal Emission Imaging System (THEMIS). The THEMIS team reserves the right to update online standard data products between official release dates, and will post such changes to this text. Older versions of standard data products or documentation will not be maintained and the update will replace the previous version. Section-A lists standard data product updates by an ERRATA_ID composed of the DATASET_ID abbreviation, the RELEASE_ID, and the updated PRODUCT_VERSION_ID. Unless otherwise noted, updates to standard data products will also be reflected in the appropriate release catalogs (CATALOG/ODTxxREL.CAT) and the appropriate indexes (INDEX/INDEX_ODTxx.TAB and INDEX/THMIDX_xx.TAB). Section-B lists miscellaneous updates to the remaining contents of the online volume. These errata are listed by date. In addition to the change requiring the errata, individual SPECTRAL_QUBEs will have modified values for the keywords PRODUCT_CREATION_DATE and PRODUCT_VERSION_ID, and an ERRATA history object will be added documenting the changes to the data. Individual IMAGE objects will have the same modified keyword values. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Section-A IR-BTR images corrected for source IR-RDR processing error ERRATA_ID = ODTIB-0001-1.1 Original CAL_IR_IMAGE processing of source IR-RDR products was incomplete causing incorrect padding between header objects and CORE data. Calibration of the IR-RDRs were rerun and validated. IR-BTR images were recreated from the revised source files and include a PRODUCT_CREATION_TIME with a value on 2002-10-03. NOTE: errata routines were not established at the time of this update Associated ERRATA_ID: none (corresponding IR-RDR files were not a part of RELEASE_ID = 0001) Header updates to all EDR QUBEs ERRATA_ID = ODTIE-0001-1.1 and ODTVE-0001-1.1 SFDU2CUBE version 1.56 update includes the following modifications to the headers of all THEMIS EDR QUBEs: - keyword UNCORRECTED_START_TIME changed to UNCORRECTED_SCLK_START_COUNT - double quotes around the values of PRODUCT_VERSION_ID - double quotes around the values of SPACECRAFT_CLOCK_START_COUNT, and SPACECRAFT_CLOCK_STOP_COUNT, UNCORRECTED_SCLK_START_COUNT. In VIS-EDR headers, the misspelling of FOCAL_PLANE_TEMPERATURE was corrected. This SFDU2CUBE version also includes improved sfdu stream processing of corrupted packets. The keyword RELEASE_ID was added to the PDS label attached to all THEMIS EDR QUBE objects. This keyword identifies the original public release of the object. Associated ERRATA_ID: ODTIB-0001-1.2, ODTVB-0001-1.1 IR-BTR and VIS-ABR headers updated with new keywords and modified values ERRATA_ID = ODTIB-0001-1.2 and ODTVB-0001-1.1 The following modifications were made to the headers of all THEMIS Brightness Record (BTR and ABR) products: - double quotes around the values of PRODUCT_VERSION_ID - added keyword SOURCE_PRODUCT_VERSION_ID - added keyword RELEASE_ID. Associated ERRATA_ID: ODTIE-0001-1.1; ODTVE-0001-1.1 VIS-ABR geometry parameters calculated incorrectly ERRATA_ID = ODTVB-0001-1.2 A bug in the THEMIS geometry projection software resulted in the miscalculation of all of the geometric parameters provided in the header of the VIS-ABR images. The geometric parameters have been recalculated and propagated into the VIS-ABR headers. Associated ERRATA_ID: none Band information bug in IR-BTR processing script corrected ERRATA_ID = ODTIB-0001-1.3 and ODTIB-0002-1.1 A bug in the Brightness Temperature Record (BTR) processing script was identified and corrected. The bug used erroneous band information to generate the BTR files, with the most obvious result being incorrect maximum brightness temperature calculations for night images. All IR-BTR and corresponding browse images were regenerated. Associated ERRATA_ID: none IR-RDR data format change to 16-bit integers ERRATA_ID = ODTIR-0002-1.1 The file format of the IR-RDR QUBEs has been modified. The data values are stored as floating point values scaled into 16-bit integers. Scaling is done per band, with the appropriate offset and scaling factor values stored in the BAND_BIN group keywords: BAND_BIN_BASE and BAND_BIN_MULTIPLIER. Similarly, value changes to several other Core Description keywords reflect the new file format. Also, an error of omission was corrected by adding the following suffix description keywords: - SAMPLE_SUFFIX_VALID_MINIMUM - LINE_SUFFIX_VALID_MINIMUM Associated ERRATA_ID: none Calibration of extra long IR-EDR images ERRATA_ID = ODTIR-0002-1.2 The standard IR-RDR processing routine fails on images with greater than 107700 FILE_RECORDS. For these images the routine was modified to first break the source IR-EDR into five 2-band images, apply the current calibration routine, then reassemble the pieces into a single IR-RDR QUBE. A comment indicating the special processing is also available in the USER_NOTE keyword of the CAL_IR_IMAGE history object. IR-RDR images associated with this errata were not available before this time; any future reprocessing will also apply this modified routine. Associated ERRATA_ID: ODTIB-0001-1.4 New BTRs for extra long source IR-RDR images ERRATA_ID = ODTIB-0001-1.4 The IR-BTR images associated with this errata were not available before this time due to failure of the standard IR-RDR processing routine on images with greater than 107700 FILE_RECORDS. A modification was made to the processing routine to allow calibration to complete, creating the source file required for the IR-BTR. Associated ERRATA_ID: ODTIR-0002-1.2 Update to files used in VIS calibration ERRATA_ID = ODTVR-0002-1.1 The STRAY_LIGHT_FILE calibration file, used in CAL_VIS_IMAGE version 1.0, was updated and all THEMIS VIS-RDR QUBEs were regenerated. See the History object for the identity of the new calibration file. Also, an error of omission was corrected by adding the following keywords to the CAL_VIS_IMAGE History object: - GEOMETRY - MEAN_MARS_FILE - MEAN_MARS_FILE_DATE Neither of the above errata affected the calibration algorithm, so the VERSION_ID in the CAL_VIS_IMAGE history object was not incremented. Associated ERRATA_ID: ODTVB-0001-1.3 and ODTVB-0002-1.1 VIS-ABR file dimension modification and data updated ERRATA_ID = ODTVB-0001-1.3 and ODTVB-0002-1.1 In the previous version of all VIS-ABRs, the value for RECORD_BYTES was inconsistent with the physical width (LINE_SAMPLES) of the image; when VIS-ABR products were recreated, adjustments were made to the values of RECORD_BYTES, FILE_RECORDS, LABEL_RECORDS, and the IMAGE pointer. It should be noted that the original values were internally consistent with the logical dimensions of the file and should not have caused problems when the file was read into most available software packages. A modification to the CAL_VIS_IMAGE calibration routine required the recreation of the source VIS-RDRs; all VIS-ABR images were recreated from the new source files. Associated ERRATA_ID: ODTVR-0002-1.1 Correction of error propagated during IR-RDR data format change ERRATA_ID = ODTIR-0002-1.3 and ODTIR-0003-1.1 A software bug applied incorrect scaling to the data during the file format change described in errata_id ODTIR-0002-1.1. All infrared RDR-QUBEs, derived brightness images (IR-BTR), and the associated browse images have been regenerated. They will be posted to the website as soon as possible. - AAREADME.HTM - CALIB/PROCESS.HTM - all CATALOG/ODTaaDS.CAT - DOCUMENT/ARCHSIS.HTM and DOCUMENT/ARCHSIS.PDF - DOCUMENT/SDPSIS.HTM and DOCUMENT/SDPSIS.PDF - all documents and tables in the INDEX sub-directory - all documents and files in the SOFTWARE sub-directory 2003-04-01 Typographical and format corrections to CATALOG files A keyword in the CATALOG/ODTVBREL.CAT was modified to correctly read: DATA_SET_ID = "ODY-M-THM-3-VISABR-V1.0". The date was added to the REFERENCE_KEY_ID and REFERENCE_DESC for the THEMIS Calibration Report in the CATALOG/REF.CAT and CATALOG/INST.CAT files. Line length corrections were made as needed to all CATALOG/*.CAT files to conform to the PDS standard of 70 characters per line. 2003-07-01 File format of BROWSE images changed All BROWSE images are now provided in PNG file format; these were previously provided in JPG file format. There is no change to the file format of the THUMBNAIL images. This change has been reflected in the following supporting documentation: AAREADME, BROWSE/BROWINFO.TXT, DOCUMENT/ARCHSIS.PDF (and LBL) 2003-10-01 VIS browse image geometric projection changed VIS browse images, previously generated with predictive geometry, are now geometrically projected using spacecraft kernel data which assumes THEMIS is nadir pointed. The images correspond with the VIS ABR IMGs containing the keyword value GEOMETRY_SOURCE_DESC = "Nadir pointing assumed" (see above ERRATA_ID = ODTVB-0001-1.5, etc.) VIS browse images at high latitudes (i.e. latitude greater than 60 degrees) are now projected using a polar stereographic projection, rather than the sinusoidal projection used for the lower latitudes. 2004-01-01 VIS browse image stretch changed VIS browse images are generated from the most highly calibrated image available, then stretched so that features are not lost in the process of reducing the image to 8 bits per pixel for storage as a PNG. For this release, all VIS browse images have been re-generated with a slightly different stretch; the new stretch avoids saturation in the darkest and brightest regions, while slightly suppressing the details in the median gray regions. As always, the full resolution data is available in the other standard data products. 2004-01-01 Typographical error in AAREADME corrected A minor typographical error was corrected in the AAREADME files. The error incorrectly listed the PNG and JPG files as having 24 bits per pixel; both formats are 8 bits per pixel. 2004-04-01 SFDU2CUBE version 1.60 SFDU2CUBE, the algorithm used to generate EDR QUBEs, has been updated to version 1.60. The modifications only affect the verbosity to the operator during the QUBE generation process, and do not change the structure or contents of the QUBE produced. For the purposes of the THEMIS data user, EDR QUBEs generated with SFDU2CUBE version 1.60 are equivalent to EDR QUBEs generated with SFDU2CUBE version 1.59, and both versions are correctly described in DOCUMENT/SDPSIS.PDF, October 2003 version. 2204-07-01 Addition of Index files to archive volumes Index files were made available in the THEMIS archive volume coincident with the July 2004 release. The AAREADME.* and DOCUMENT/ARCHSIS.* files were updated to reflect the addition of the index files in the archive directory structure. 2004-07-01 Special format of Index files There are four types of index tables available with the THEMIS data sets; see the INDEX/INDXINFO.TXT for a description of contents and usage of each index. The INDEX_ODTaz and CMIDX_ODTaz tables follow the PDS INDEX_TABLE specialized TABLE object format, however, they are simply identified as TABLE objects in their respective labels. 2004-10-01 Updates to AAREADME and files in DOCUMENT directory In the DOCUMENT/SDPSIS.PDF, the reference for THEMIS document [6], previously listed as 'submitted', has been completed as follows: The Thermal Emission Imaging System (THEMIS) for the Mars 2001 Odyssey Mission, P.R. Christensen, et. Al., Space Science Review, Vol 110, pp 85-130, 2004. HTML versions of the AAREADME, DOCUMENT/ARCHSIS, and DOCUMENT/SDPSIS were generated and made available. The SDPSIS.HTM and the associated image files are available in a new sub-directory DOCUMENT/SDPSIS_HTM. The AAREADME and ARCHSIS were modified to include the new sub-directory. 2004-10-01 Known gap in data collection: 9100-9199 No visible images were successfully collected between orbits 9100 and 9199. 2005-01-01 Update to CALIB/PROCESS document The CALIB/PROCESS document, version 0.10, has been updated to describe the current infrared calibration routine CAL_IR_IMAGE v4.8. The primary modification to this routine is in the STRAYLIGHT algorithm, geom_ghost routine (section 2.3). This routine was modified to improve the simulation of the downtrack optical offsets, thereby improving the effectiveness of the STRAYLIGHT removal process. 2005-04-01 Known gap in data collection: 12200-12298 No infrared images were collected between orbits 12200 and 12298 due to Mars Odyssey Solar Conjunction 2004. Limited visible images were collected for the purpose of monitoring THEMIS instrument health; all have significant data loss. 2005-07-01 SFDU2CUBE version 1.64 SFDU2CUBE, the algorithm used to generate EDR QUBEs, has been updated to version 1.64. The modifications fix a bug in the generation of VIS-EDR QUBEs which have an INTERFRAME_DELAY value other than 1.0. There is no change to the structure or the contents of the QUBE produced. For the purposes of the THEMIS data user, EDR QUBEs generated with SFDU2CUBE version 1.64 are equivalent to EDR QUBEs generated from previous versions of SFDU2CUBE; all versions are correctly described in DOCUMENT/SDPSIS.PDF, July 2005 version. 2005-07-01 Update to documentation related to CAL_VIS_IMAGE Version 4.0 The following documentation was updated to reflect the modifications associated with the use of CAL_VIS_IMAGE, Version 4.0. DOCUMENT/SDPSIS - Version July 1, 2005 CALIB/*_FILES/* - various files used in new calibration available CALIB/PROCESS - updates will be available as soon as possible 2005-07-01 Corrections to INDEX tables and labels Geometry values were updated in INDEX/THMIDX_IR.TAB for the following images: I09024002, I09052001, I09053009, I09055008, I09068010, I09071002, I09072002, I09073002, I09078002, I09079002, I09080002, I09081002. The DESCRIPTION for PRODUCT_TYPE in all INDEX/INDEX_ODTxx.LBL files was corrected to read "Processing type suffix used in PRODUCT_ID." 2005-10-01 Character corrected in MISSION.CAT An illegal character was corrected in the CATALOG/MISSION.CAT. 2006-01-01 Update to documentation related to revisions in Visible products The following documentation was updated to reflect the modifications associate with the use of CAL_VIS_IMAGE, Version 4.1, and/or the availability of the VIS-GEO products AAREADME* - publication date 2006-01-01 DOCUMENT/ARCHSIS - Version January 1, 2006 CALIB/*_FILES/* - various files used in new calibration available CALIB/PROCESS* - Version January 1, 2006 and split into two sections covering IR or VIS processing CATALOG/CATINFO.TXT - table of contents for the catalog directory The following documentation was added to the PDS archive CATALOG/ODTVGREL.CAT - release object for the VIS-GEO data set GEOMETRY/GEOINFO.TXT - table of contents for the geometry directory GEOMETRY/GEOMETRY* - text files describing the VIS-GEO products GEOMETRY/ODTVG*/ODTVGVOL.CAT - catalog object for the VIS-GEO archive volume INDEX/INDEX_ODTVG* - index listing release information for the VIS-GEO products 2006-04-01 Odyssey spacecraft in yaw orientation during orbits 15621 to 16558 In order to mitigate potential communication problems, the Odyssey spacecraft performed several yaw maneuvers which changed the nominal mapping orientation between June and September 2005. The yaw maneuver is a discrete, counterclockwise rotation around the THEMIS boresight. During the yaw periods, summarized below, the geometry provided for the THEMIS images correctly accounts for the position of the spacecraft. ORBIT_RANGE YAW_ANGLE 816-15620 0 degrees 15621-15790 5 degrees 15791-16410 12 degrees 16411-16558 5 degrees 16559-present 0 degrees The yaw orientation is most obvious in geometrically projected visible (VIS-GEO) images, as each framelet appears to be rotated relative to the image length. This is the only effect on the visible images; there is no change to the quality of the calibrated radiance. While less obvious in the projected infrared images, the effect of the yaw maneuvers on the infrared data is more severe. In the nominal mapping orientation each line of an infrared image is collected perpendicular to the flight direction, and Time-Delay Integration (TDI) can be used to improve the signal-to-noise ratio of each pixel by co-adding 16 measurements of each image line. However, the use of TDI during the yaw orientation has the effect of "blurring" together adjacent pixels in each line. Since TDI was enabled throughout the yaw periods, the cross-track spatial resolution has been compromised in all yaw infrared images; the values for infrared pixel resolution (LINE_RES_KM and SAMPLE_RES_KM) calculated by ISIS and available in the THMIDX_IR.TAB are incorrect. At this time, the THEMIS team recommends that IR-RDR data from orbits 15621 to 16558 be used with caution. These data should not be used for compositional analysis, as there are known problems resulting from using the standard infrared calibration algorithms. Any attempts to compensate for the affects of the yaw orientation within the calibration routine will be announced and documented with the appropriate errata entries. 2006-07-01 Corrections to INDEX_ODTVG FILE_SPECIFICATION_NAME The FILE_SPECIFICATION_NAME for all VIS-GEO products listed a non-existent directory path; this was corrected in the INDEX_ODTVG.TAB for all records. Various BYTE keywords in the INDEX_ODTVG.LBL were adjusted to accommodate the slightly longer corrected path. 2006-12-01 and 2007-01-01 Update to documentation related to spatial summing in Infrared products Sections of the THEMIS SDPSIS were updated to describe the new spatial summing capability of the infrared camera; the appendices were updated with the QUBE header modifications required to correctly describe the characteristics of the summed infrared image data. 2007-07-01 Known gap in data collection: 21432-21676 No infrared or visible images were collected between orbits 21432 and 21676 due to Mars Odyssey Solar Conjunction 2006. Limited infrared reset (R-EDRs) were collected for the purpose of monitoring THEMIS instrument telemetry. 2007-10-01 New text file: NODATA.TXT A new text file is now available in any data, browse, or geometry directory that is known to have no image data files (for example, see BROWSE/V091XX/NODATA.TXT). Empty directories that do not contain this file should be brought to the attention of the host facility (archive@mars.asu.edu). 2007-10-02 Corrections to THMIDX_IR Geometry Values Various geometric values were corrected in the THMIDX_IR table for the following images: I02484005 I02784005 I02823006 I02923002 I02928002 I02934005 I02965002 I02983002 I04426005 I04461002 I05263015 I09601010 I09607011 I09649010 I11998007 I17385015 I17846017 I18147014 I18283012 I18355008 I18880006 I19506001 R03221001 No change to the image data files was necessary. 2008-04-01 Correction in VIS-GEO Labels: 16800-24599 A duplicate keyword was discovered in the labels of almost all VIS-GEO products in orbits 16800 through 24599. The label was corrected and released; there is no change to the referenced VIS-GEO projected CUBE file. 2008-04-01 Update to CALIB/PROCESS_IR document The CALIB/PROCESS_IR document, version 0.21, has been updated to describe the current infrared calibration routine CAL_IR_IMAGE v5.1. The majority of the modifications to this document describe how IR spatially summed images are collected and handled. There is also a change as to how IR-BTR images are produced. 2008-07-01 Known anomalous VIS images Due to an anomaly of the THEMIS VIS camera, all images in orbits 25732-25822 are null on the east half of the image. Processing has been completed as much as possible, however these images should be used with caution. 2008-10-01 to 2009-04-01 Typographic error in VIS-GEO Labels There is a typographic error in all VIS-GEO labels for orbits 816-26799. The corrected keyword and value pair should read CORE_ITEM_TYPE = LSB_INTEGER The keyword values in the attached label are correct. Previously released VIS-GEO products will be corrected over the course of the next few months. Since this correction does not affect the CUB file no errata will be issued. In the course of the label correction, 120 released products (out of 95,600 total) were found to be corrupted and have been regenerated. Errata objects and indexes have been appropriately updated. 2009-04-01 Error in VIS-GEO Index The PRODUCT_VERSION_ID value of "0.0" was updated to the correct value of "1.0" for all VIS-GEO products in orbits 19000 through 28999. The value was correct in the individual product labels. 2009-04-01 Typographical errors corrected in labels Minor typographical errors in the DESCRIPTION of the following files has been corrected: I01261005, V01261006, V03249001, V05517007, V06248003, V06260001, V06270002. The keyword value was corrected without touching the data, therefore no version update will be issued. 2009-07-01 Updates to documentation related to availability of IR-GEO special products The following documentation was updated to reflect the availability of the Infrared special projected products (IR-GEO, IR-DCS, and IR-PBT): AAREADME* - publication date 2009-07-01 CALIB/PROCESS_IR.PDF - Version July 1, 2009 CATALOG/CATINFO.TXT - table of contents for the catalog directory DOCUMENT/ARCHSIS - Version July 1, 2009 GEOMETRY/GEOINFO.TXT - table of contents for the geometry directory GEOMETRY/GEOMETRY* - Version July 1, 2009 INDEX/INDINFO.TXT - table of contents for the index directory The following documentation was added to the THEMIS PDS archive CATALOG/ODTIGREL.CAT - release object for the IR-GEO data set CATALOG/ODTIPREL.CAT - release object for the IR-PBT data set GEOMETRY/ODTIG*/ODTIGVOL.CAT - catalog object for the IR-GEO archive volume GEOMETRY/ODTIP*/ODTIPVOL.CAT - catalog object for the IR-PBT archive volume INDEX/INDEX_ODTIG* - index listing release information for the IR-GEO products INDEX/INDEX_IRDCS* - index listing release information for the IR-DCS products INDEX/INDEX_ODTIP* - index listing release information for the IR-PBT products 2009-07-15 Known gap in data collection: 30821-31075 No infrared or visible images were collected between orbits 30821 and 31075 due to Mars Odyssey Solar Conjunction 2008. Limited infrared reset (R-EDRs) were collected for the purpose of monitoring THEMIS instrument telemetry. 2009-07-15 New keywords added to headers to describe Odyssey orientation To improve image documentation during the periods when the Odyssey spacecraft is not pointed at true nadir, four new keywords have been added to the headers of all THEMIS standard and special data products. The keywords are SPACECRAFT_ORIENTATION, SPACECRAFT_ORIENTATION_DESC, SPACECRAFT_POINTING_MODE, and SPACECRAFT_POINTING_MODE_DESC A complete description of the values for these keywords is available in the new document DOCUMENT/ODY_ORIENT_POINT.TXT. Other virtual volume documentation that has been updated to reflect these changes to the THEMIS datasets include AAREADME, DOCUMENT/DOCINFO.TXT, DOCUMENT/ARCHSIS, and DOCUMENT/SDPSIS. These keywords are available in all products starting with orbit 30100; they will be populated in all previously released products as soon as possible, starting with images collected while Odyssey was pointed away from nadir. 2009-10-01 Known gaps in data collection: 31836-31863 and 32090-32138 No visible images were collected between orbits 31836 and 31863. No infrared or visible images were collected between orbits 32090 and 32138. 2010-01-01 Update to GEOMETRY/GEOMETRY document The GEOMETRY/GEOMETRY document has been updated to describe the change in display format of the IR-PBT and IR-DCS products. These products were previously provided in the RECTIFIED display format for conservation of disk space; they are now provide in the full projection display format for ease of viewing. 2010-04-01 Corrected format of IR-DCS (orbit 5000-5199) DCS images in orbits 5000-5199 were erroneously released in the outdated RECTIFIED display format (see above 2010-01-01 ERRATA item). The DCS images were regenerated from the available IR-GEO product and replaced in the online data archive. 2010-07-01 Corrected data type statements in DATA/TLM.FMT The DATA/TLM.FMT file previously contained several bit_columns composing the IRIS_STATUS bit string with errors in the DATA_TYPE keyword value pair. The corrected DATA/TLM.FMT file now lists all these bit_columns as having BIT_DATA_TYPE = MSB_UNSIGNED_INTEGER The corrected file is available in all IR-EDR directories staring with orbit 34500; corrections to the TLM.FMT file in previously released directories will be made coincident with other IR-EDR reprocessing activities. 2010-10-01 Bad start/stop times in Infrared EDR, RDR, and BTR Headers Infrared headers of EDR qubes, RDR qubes, and BTR images for orbits 18584-18595 were corrected for erroneous null values in the START_TIME_ET and STOP_TIME_ET keywords. The image data itself was not corrupt, but it was regenerated as part of the effort to correct the header values. 2012-01-05 Replaced missing files during hardware upgrade During a disk hardware upgrade the several files were discovered missing and were replaced; since no new data was generated, individual files were not tagged with errata version information. The files include: - the TLM.FMT from many infrared EDR directories - many of the the V284XXEDR/*EDR.QUBs - many DCS.png files from these orbit ranges: 8000-9099 10000-14599 16800-17899 27200-27299 2012-07-01 Update to GEOMETRY/GEOMETRY document describing DESPECKLE processing The GEOMETRY/GEOMETRY document has been updated to describe the new DESPECKLE processing applied to selected VIS-GEO products. This processing step is only necessary when onboard image corruption produces anomalous bright (or dark) pixels in variable patterns throughout the image. When applied, the individual VIS-GEO label will be tagged with a DESPECKLE history object detailing the processing step and parameters used. Concurrent with this document update, less than 10 VIS-GEO products in RELEASE_ID=0040 have the DESPECKLE processing applied. Previously published VIS-GEO products with similar corruption will have the DESPECKLE processing applied and will be re-released during a future release. 2012-10-01 Minor typographical errors corrected in CATALOG files Minor typographical errors related to use of quotes were corrected in the CATALOG/INST.CAT and ODT*REL.CAT files. 2012-10-01 Update to GEOMETRY/GEOMETRY document describing new HISTORY object Appendix 7 has been added to the GEOMETRY/GEOMETRY document to describe a new HISTORY object added to GEO.LBL files of images collected after January 2012. The new GEOMETRY QUALITY HISTORY object details parameters affecting the geometric accuracy of each image, especially with respect to the M01 Odyssey attitude control mode enabled during image collection. 2014-04-01 New keywords added to IMAGE headers and described in DOCUMENT/SDPSIS VIS-ABR and IR-BTR IMAGE files have slight modifications to the attached ascii headers. All image headers now contain the MD5_CHECKSUM keyword value pair which can be used to verify the integrity of the data. IR-BTR headers also contain keywords describing the scientific meaning of the data values: SAMPLE_NAME = "BRIGHTNESS_TEMPERATURE" SAMPLE_UNIT = "KELVIN" All changes are documented in the appropriate DOCUMENT/SDPSIS appendices. Previously published IMAGE products will have the headers modified during a future re-release. 2014-04-03 Incomplete IMAGE headers corrected with appropriate values The following BTR and ABR IMAGE headers were released with placeholder values for most of the header keywords; these have been replaced. Since the data in the original files was not affected and has not been changed in the corrected images, the no errata will be issued (VERSION_ID=1.0). The non-projected data products, including DATA_SET_IDs {"ODY-M-THM-2-IREDR-V1.0", "ODY-M-THM-2-VISEDR-V1.0", "ODY-M-THM-3-IRRDR-V1.0", "ODY-M-THM-3-VISRDR-V1.0", "ODY-M-THM-3-IRBTR-V1.0", "ODY-M-THM-3-VISABR-V1.0"}, are now included in the new VOLUME_SET_NAME = "MARS ODYSSEY THEMIS STANDARD PRODUCTS" (VOLUME_SET_ID = USA_NASA_PDS_ODTSDP). The projected products, including DATA_SET_IDs {"ODY-M-THM-5-IRGEO-V1.0","ODY-M-THM-5-VISGEO-V1.0", "ODY-M-THM-5-IRPBT-V1.0"}, are now included in the new VOLUME_SET_NAME = "MARS ODYSSEY THEMIS PROJECTED PRODUCTS" (VOLUME_SET_ID = USA_NASA_PDS_ODTGEO). 2014-07-31 Modifications to THEMIS PROJECTED PRODUCTS (ODTGEO_v2) volume The ODTGEO_v2 volume structure has significant changes from previous Projected Product data releases. The GEOMETRY directory has been discontinued and the contents redistributed as follows: - the browse images are now available in the BROWSE directory; - the browse_dcs images are now available in the BROWSE directory; - the data products (GEO & PBT) are now available in the DATA directory; - the GEOMETRY document is now available in the DOCUMENT directory. Documents describing only the Standard Product types are now only available on the ODTSDP volume. Documents describing the Projected Products or both products are available as previously published, with the following modifications: - AAREADME: reflects the contents of only the ODTGEO archive volume - ERRATA.TXT: file you are reading; documents the changes due to splitting the standard and projected products - VOLDESC.CAT: values as per new VOLUME_SET_ID = USA_NASA_PDS_ODTGEO - BROWSE/BROWINFO.TXT: reflects the contents of only the ODTGEO volume - CATALOG/CATINFO.TXT: reflects the contents of only the ODTGEO volume - CATALOG/DSMAP*.CAT: new catalog files describing the projection standards of the data - CATALOG/PERSON.CAT: updated with current THEMIS staff information - DATA/ODT*VOL.CAT: values as per new VOLUME_SET_ID, and corrected minor typographical issues - DOCUMENT/DOCINFO.TXT: reflects the contents of only the ODTGEO volume - DOCUMENT/ARCHSIS: reflects the contents of the ODTGEO archive volume - DOCUMENT/GEOMETRY: this is the "SDPSIS" for the ODTGEO archive volume; significant modifications to describe the revised projection processing and new products - DOCUMENT/ODY_ORIENT_POINT.TXT: updated for new orbits since last revision - INDEX/INDXINFO.TXT: reflects the contents of this archive volume only - INDEX/*TAB: see detailed errata item - SOFTWARE/SRC: zipped version of MD5_QUBE.PL code added to correct issues encountered using the online virtual (Note: the revised versions of the AAREADME, DSMAP*.CAT, and ARCHSIS documents will be published ASAP.) 2014-07-31 Highlighted Differences in Version 2.0 GEO products There are several reasons for upgrading the projection software used for generating the THEMIS GEO products, one of the most important reasons is that a new infrared camera model is only available in ISIS-3. This new camera model includes significant improvements to the image band-to-band correlations, which is critical for infrared spectroscopic studies. There are also noticeable improvements in the VIS projected products due to the changes in the core ISIS software. Knowing this transition is not easy, the THEMIS team highly recommends that all users also upgrade to using the ISIS-3 software as soon as possible. The differences between ISIS-2 and ISIS-3 are significant and involve every aspect from the core code, to the command functions, and the resulting CUBE products. Please see the revised DOCUMENT/GEOMETRY document for more details, references to new ISIS documentation, and THEMIS product examples. The THM-GEO products are being released as ISIS-3 CUB files and may be further manipulated with additional ISIS-3 commands or other projection software that is aware of the ISIS-3 CUB file format. As with previous THM-GEO releases, PDS compliant, detached label file is released with each THM-GEO product. The new LBL only has a few differences as compared to the previous version: - some keyword and value pairs have been changed due to the differences between the ISIS-2 and ISIS-3 file formats; - most of the HISTORY objects that document ISIS processing steps have been changed to reflect the ISIS-3 commands and parameters; - the PDS standard IMAGE_MAP_PROJECTION object has been added to the label and is populated with appropriate the ISIS-3 geometric projection values. Another significant change to the THM-GEO Version 2.0 products is the naming of the THM-GEO file, the projections available per image, and the associated BROWSE2 available per projection. As appropriate for the observation parameters, every viable IR-RDR and VIS-RDR image will be be used to generate either a Sinusoidal or Polar Stereographic projected product named SNU.CUB or POL.CUB, respectively. A BROWSE2 (png format) images is available for every THM-GEO product, and follows the same naming convention of SNU.png or POL.png. For most non-polar images, a second, cylindrical projection product and browse will now be available: the Equirectangular product, named EQR.CUB. Note: the Simple Cylindrical and Equirectangular projections are equivalent when the projection center latitude is the Equator. It is expected that these products will be especially useful as basemaps when used in conjunction with some of the other, higher resolution Mars datasets available. However, since the THEMIS image center coordinates are used as the projection parameters, these may need to be refined in order to mosaic the datasets; this can be easily done with either the ISIS-3 MAP2MAP command, or with similar functions available in the GDAL image software. More information, including all projection parameters, are discussed in the appropriate sections of the revised GEOMETRY document. 2014-07-31 Highlighted Differences in IR-PBT Version 2.0 products Although the projection software generating the IR-PBT version 2.0 products has changed from ISIS-2 to ISIS-3, there are very few other differences between the new and revised products. When comparing the new products to previously released products (same projection), the user may notice the following which have been attributed to the change in ISIS software: - slight changes in overall dimensions (lines and samples) - minor differences (+/- 2 degrees) in the total temperature range. There are also some differences in the attached HEADER: - some the order of some keywords has been changed - ISIS-2 keywords and values have been replaced with the ISIS-3 equivalent - some geometry keywords (SOLAR_LONGITUDE, INCIDENCE_ANGLE, EMISSION_ANGLE, and LOCAL_SOLAR_TIME) have been added. See the revised DOCUMENT/GEOMETRY document for more details and HEADER examples. 2014-07-31 New VIS-GEO derived products released as Version 2.0 The THEMIS team is now delivering two new VIS-GEO derived products: VIS-ALB is a projected Visible Albedo image product VIS-RGB is a projected false color composite browse image. Since both of these products are being generated using the ISIS-3 projection software, the new products will be published starting with the PRODUCT_VERSION_ID = 2.0 designation even though there are no previously available files. See the revised DOCUMENT/GEOMETRY document for a full discussion of the processing and file structure for these new products. 2014-07-31 Modifications to RELEASE_ID=0048 INDEX files in ODTGEO_v2 In conjunction with the July 2014 (release_id=0048) release, only the index records for the current release are available in the ODTGEO_v2 volume; note that all index files include the "0048" release designation. The column widths and contents included in the indexes of all four ODTGEO_v2 datasets (ODTIG, ODTIP, ODTVG, and ODTVA) have been synchronized so that all indexes can be stored as a single, unified table; see new INDEX_*LBL files for details. This may cause an INDEX_*0048.TAB to be incompatible with the index files available in the ODTGEO_v1 volume. 2014-08-06 Bad projection type in ODTGEO rel=0048 products (PBT, ALB, RGB, DCS) The MAP_PROJECTION_TYPE listed in the IMG-LBL and/or the index table for many of the release_id=0048 ODTGEO Projected Products (PBT, ALB, RGB, DCS) was incorrectly fixed as "SINUSOIDAL", regardless of the actual projection of the image. The labels and index tables have been corrected with the appropriate projection type. There were no issues with any of the data values, so the data was not regenerated and the version_id will remain at 2.0. 2014-10-01 Modifications to THEMIS STANDARD PRODUCTS (ODTSDP_v1) volume The ODTSDP_v1 volume structure is very similar to the structure of the original unified THEMIS VOLUME_SET, with the most significant change being the omission of the GEOMETRY directory. Documents describing only the Projected Product types are now only available on the ODTGEO volume. Documents describing the Standard Products or both products are available as previously published, with the following modifications: - AAREADME: reflects the contents of only the ODTSDP archive volume - ERRATA.TXT: file you are reading; documents all of the changes due to splitting the standard and projected products - VOLDESC.CAT: values as per new VOLUME_SET_ID = USA_NASA_PDS_ODTSDP - CATALOG/CATINFO.TXT: reflects the contents of only the ODTSDP volume - CATALOG/PERSON.CAT: updated with current THEMIS staff information - DATA/ODT*VOL.CAT: values as per new VOLUME_SET_ID, and corrected minor typographical issues - DOCUMENT/ARCHSIS: reflects the contents of the ODTSDP archive volume - DOCUMENT/ODY_ORIENT_POINT.TXT: updated for new orbits since last revision - INDEX/INDXINFO.TXT: reflects the contents of this archive volume only - INDEX/*TAB: see detailed errata item - SOFTWARE/SRC: zipped version of MD5_QUBE.PL code added to correct issues encountered using the online virtual volume (Note: the revised versions of the AAREADME and ARCHSIS documents will be published ASAP.) 2014-10-01 Modification of INDEX files in both ODTSDP_v1 and ODTGEO_v2 Starting in October 2014 (release_id=0049), the contents and format of the product INDEX tables (like INDEX_ODT*.TAB) has been significantly modified as compared to previous releases. The modifications reflect the changes to the directory structure of both volumes and allow the index tables to be uniform across all the THEMIS datasets (ODTIE, ODTVE, ODTIR, ODTVR, ODTIB, ODTVB, ODTIG, ODTVG, ODTIP and ODTVA). Please see the INDXINFO.TXT file and the associated label files for details describing the new fields and field formats. Note that the general information indexes (THMIDX_IR.TAB and THMIDX_VIS.TAB) have not been changed. Concurrent with these modifications, both cumulative indexes (CMIDX*TAB) and single release volume indexes (INDEX*####.TAB) will now be available as appropriate. 2014-10-01 ODTGEO_v1 data temporarily available in ODTGEO_v2 volume The reprocessing and re-release of projected data products from orbits before 52300 will require at least a year or more to complete. During this period, the originally published products will be accessible from the ODTGEO_v2 DATA directory and will be listed in the appropriate cumulative indexes. As they are generated, the Version-2.0 products will replace the original products. For example, release_id=0001 VIS-GEO 1.0 products are temporarily available under ODTGEO_v2/data/odtvg1_0001/; when the version 2.0 products are generated, this directory and its contents will be replaced with ODTGEO_v2/data/odtvg2_0001. The original projected products will remain in the permanent archive volume ODTGEO_v1. 2014-10-01 DATA_SET_ID typographical error in release_id=0048 VIS-ALB products The DATA_SET_ID in most release_id=0048 VIS-ALB products included a minor error; the value should be: DATA_SET_ID = "ODY-M-THM-5-VISALB-V2.0" The keyword was corrected in all images without affecting the data, so no errata will be defined. In the course of the label correction, 3 released VIS-ALB images (out of 2728 total) were found to have additional label corruption: V52703006 V53290010 V53295019. Errata objects and indexes have been appropriately updated. 2015-01-01 IR-GEO labels include COMPRESSED_FILE and UNCOMPRESSED_FILE objects Starting in orbit 54500, IR-GEO labels associated with zip compressed data files now include COMPRESSED_FILE and UNCOMPRESSED_FILE objects to more completely describe the file state. The COMPRESSED_FILE object includes details about the compression software used and the size of the uncompressed file. 2015-01-01 Continued cleanup of ODTSDP_v1 and ODTGEO_v2 data and documentation The transition to the new format of the ODTSDP_v1 and ODTGEO_v2 volumes continues with (1) general cleanup of the directory trees to remove the old directory structures, (2) addressing outstanding documentation issues, and (3) the correction of minor data issues. The following documentation issues are now complete: - the AAREADME.TXT and DOCUMENT/ARCHSIS.PDF have been revised to reflect the new volume structure; identical copies of both documents are now available in both of the ODTSDP_v1 and ODTGEO_v2 volumes. - the VOLDESC.CAT text on each volume has been updated for the contents of the virtual volume; also, a non-standard directory ODT*/DATA/VOLDESC/ has been added with the VOLDESC_#####.CAT files for each archive volume. - the DATA_SET catalog files have been updated in the CATALOG directory on the appropriate volumes: ODTSDP_v1 updated with (ODTIBDS.CAT, ODTIEDS.CAT, ODTIRDS.CAT, ODTVBDS.CAT, ODTVEDS.CAT, and ODTVRDS.CAT); ODTGEO_v2 updated with (ODTIGDS.CAT, ODTIPDS.CAT, ODTVADS.CAT, and ODTVGDS.CAT). - the DOS carriage return character (^M) was discovered to be omitted in several of the published INDEX tables; this typographical error was corrected without changing the values in the tables. The following minor data issues are now complete: - throughout the data directories, several extraneous files have been identified and removed. - the DATA_SET_ID in most released IR-PBT products from release_id 0048 and 0049 included a minor typographical error which has now been fixed; the correct value should be DATA_SET_ID = "ODY-M-THM-5-IRPBT-V2.0". The keyword was corrected in all image headers without affecting the data so no errata will be defined. In some cases, the PRODUCT_VERSION_ID was also reset to the correct value of "2.0". 2015-01-01 Missing keywords from all release_id=0050 EDR QUBE labels The following keywords, with the values shown, are not available in any of the release_id=0050 EDR QUBE labels: SPACECRAFT_ORIENTATION_DESC = (PITCH,ROLL,YAW) SPACECRAFT_ORIENTATION = (0,0,0) SPACECRAFT_POINTING_MODE = "NADIR" ^SPACECRAFT_POINTING_MODE_DESC = "ODY_ORIENT_POINT.TXT" RELEASE_ID = "0050" The omission will be corrected as soon as possible. 2015-04-01 Missing keywords from all IRS release_id=0051 EDR QUBE labels Continuing the issues similar to the previous release, the RELEASE_ID keyword is not available in the IRS-EDR QUBE lables; also some of the line and/or space formatting in the attached labels is non-standard. However, all EDR QUBEs do have the SPACECRAFT_POINTING and SPACECRAFT_ORIENTATION keywords with the values correctly populated. The omission will be corrected as soon as possible. 2015-04-01 Changed source of geometric information in THMIDX_IR.TAB and THMIDX_VIS.TAB For the convenience of the user, the general index tables (THMIDX_IR.TAB and THMIDX_VIS.TAB) contain basic geometry values representative of the image as collected (i.e. non-projected); see the GEOMETRY.PDF document or the appropriate label files for more details. Starting with orbit 52300, these values populating these tables will now be obtained using the ISIS-V3 software. Also, for multi-band Visible images, the values will represent Band-3, or the first available band. Both of these changes will result in minor, but important, differences compared to the values released previously. The Release Volume INDEX tables for for RELEASE_ID = 0048 through 0050 have been regenerated at this time; all previously released indexes will be regenerated concurrent with the ODTGEO-Version 2 reprocessing efforts. 2015-07-01 Missing keywords from all release_id=0052 EDR QUBE labels Continuing the issues similar to the previous few releases, the RELEASE_ID keyword is not available in any of the EDR QUBE lables; also some of the line and/or space formatting in the attached labels is non-standard. Most EDR QUBEs in this release do not have the SPACECRAFT_POINTING or SPACECRAFT_ORIENTATION keywords; however, the RDR QUBEs do have these keywords with correct values. The omission will be corrected as soon as possible. 2015-07-17 Geometry generated using updated ISIS-V3 software All ISIS-V3 geometry values and products released between July 2014 and April 2015 (release_id 0048-0051) were generated using ISIS Version 3.4.3.5155 (03/2013). Several THEMIS specific issues were corrected and made available in ISIS Version 3.4.9 (11/2014); see ISIS Release Notes for more information. Therefore, all geometry values available in the BTR/ABR headers and general index tables (THMIDX_IR.TAB and THMIDX_VIS.TAB), as well as all the projected products, starting with release_id=0052 (start orbit 56800), have been generated using ISIS-3.4.9. One of the issues corrected in ISIS-3.4.9 is a problem with calculated geometry values for images collected in orbits ~55400-56799; products and indexes for this orbit range will be regenerated using ISIS-3.4.9 and re-released soon (date TBD). The only changes to the labels and/or headers in ISIS-3.4.9 are the addition of a BandNumber keyword in the BandBin Group and a history object for the THM2ISIS step. See the ODTGEO2/DOCUMENT/GEOMETRY.PDF for details. 2015-10-01 Missing keywords from all release_id=0053 EDR QUBE labels Continuing the issues similar to the previous few releases, the RELEASE_ID keyword is not available in any of the EDR QUBE lables; also some of the line and/or space formatting in the attached labels is non-standard. Most EDR QUBEs in this release do not have the SPACECRAFT_POINTING or SPACECRAFT_ORIENTATION keywords; however, the RDR QUBEs do have these keywords with correct values. The omission will be corrected as soon as possible. 2016-02-01 Correction of missing keywords from RELEASE_ID 0050, 0051, 0052, 0053 The reported omission of keywords in EDRs from the new data releases of 2015 (RELEASE_IDs 0050-0053) has now been corrected. All EDRs and higher level products should now include the correct values for the keywords RELEASE_ID, SPACECRAFT_ORIENTATION, SPACECRAFT_ORIENTATION_DESC, SPACECRAFT_POINTING_MODE, and SPACECRAFT_POINTING_MODE_DESC. Only the labels were affected by this correction; since the data did not change, neither the PRODUCT_CREATION_DATE nor the VERSION_ID values were rolled. The only exception is I55267047; see entry for ODTIE-0050-1.1. A summary of the corrected files, listed by dataset-RELEASE_ID: ODTIE1_0050 = all keywords added to all I-EDR.QUBs ODTVE1_0050 = all keywords added to all V-EDR.QUBs ODTIE1_0051 = RELEASE_ID keyword added to all I-EDR.QUBs ODTBWS1_0051 = RELEASE_ID keyword added to all I-BROWSE ODTV**_0051 = no updates required ODTIE1_0052 = keywords added as needed to all I-EDR.QUBs ODTVE1_0052 = all keywords added to all V-EDR.QUBs ODTIE1_0053 = all keywords added to all I-EDR.QUBs ODTVE1_0053 = all keywords added to all V-EDR.QUBs ODTI**_0053 = SPACECRAFT keywords added to almost all IR products ODTV**_0053 = SPACECRAFT keywords added to almost all VIS products Approximately 50 additional files, scattered throughout these releases, were discovered to be missing one or more of the keywords and were corrected at this time. 2016-04-01 Alternative band used in VIS-ABR and VIS-ALB images VIS-ABR and VIS-ALB are single band images usually derived from Band-3 of the source VIS-RDR. If Band-3 is not available, or is significantly corrupt, an alternative band is used; in all cases, the band is identified in the attached label. Starting with orbit 60100, Band-4 may be used as the alternative band; this is a change from previous releases, where the first available band was the usual alternative choice. Users should check the image label for band identification information. Appropriate sections of the SDPSIS and GEOMETRY documents have been updated to describe this change. 2016-07-01 Miscellaneous INDEX file updates The DATA_SET_ID keyword values in all cumulative and volume INDEX label files was incorrect and has been updated to the correct value. INDEX_ODTIG0055.TAB and INDEX_ODTVG0055.TAB: Most records in both these volume indexs were discovered to have inappropriate placeholder values in several of the path fields. Both tables, and the duplicate records in the cumulative indexes, have been updated with the correct values. THMIDX_VIS.TAB: Approximately 5400 records from orbits 22495 through 23620 were discovered to have inappropriate placeholder values (0.000) for several of the geometry fields. The cumulative table was updated with the actual values. 2016-10-01 Re-release of data due to revised spacecraft position Geometry parameters of IR observations collected during orbits 55600-56799 (release_id=0051) have been revised using ISIS-V3.4.9 and an improved model of the spacecraft postion; this corrects the issue identified in ERRATA.TXT entry 2015-07-17. Replaced products are tagged appropriately and documented in erratas ODTIR-0051-1.1, ODTIB-0051-1.1, ODTIG-0051-2.1, ODTIP-0051-2.1, and ODTID-0051-2.1 (above). Geometry parameters for Reset observation have also been updated and are available in the updated THMIDX_IR[0051].TAB tables; the geometry update does not affect the R-EDR or R-RDR images, so none of these products were updated at this time. 2016-10-06 Minor INDEX file updates Minor errors were discovered and corrected in path values in several of the INDEX files. Most of the corrections were applied to the IRGEO and VISGEO INDEX files for releases 0057 and 0051; both the volume indexes and the cumulative index files were corrected. 2017-04-01 Updated values of Geometry Label Keywords Several keywords in the IMAGE_MAP_PROJECTION object located in the detached geomtry labels (*.LBL) of ODTGEO_v2 were discovered to have incorrect values and have been corrected; note that there are no issues with the attached ISIS3 label or data and these files have not been changed, nor will the processing VERSION_ID or PRODUCT_CREATION_TIME be rolled. These keyword values are correct in all new products starting in RELEASE_ID=0059 (starting orbit 64500). The first change is that the value of the keywords A_AXIS_RADIUS, B_AXIS_RADIUS, and C_AXIS_RADIUS is now given in units that match the MAP_SCALE; therefore, the RADIUS values have have been translated into kilometers to match the MAP_SCALE which is given in kilometers per pixel. For example, the previous radius value of 3396190.000 [m] is now given as 3396.190 [km]. The second change is that the values of the LINE_PROJECTION_OFFSET and SAMPLE_PROJECTION_OFFSET were being incorrectly calculated from the ISIS3 values for UpperLeftCornerX and UpperLeftCornerY; these offset values should now be correct according to the PDS definition for these keywords. The above keyword values have been corrected and re-released in all of the *(GEO).LBL files available in the following ODTGEO_v2 volumes (orbit ranges are given for convenience): TBD odtig2_0048 & odtvg2_0048 (52300-53399) TBD odtig2_0049 & odtvg2_0049 (53400-54499) TBD odtig2_0050 & odtvg2_0050 (54500-55599) 2017-04-01 odtig2_0051 & odtvg2_0051 (55600-56799) 2017-04-01 odtig2_0052 & odtvg2_0052 (56800-57899) 2017-04-01 odtig2_0053 & odtvg2_0053 (57900-58999) 2017-04-01 odtig2_0054 & odtvg2_0054 (59000-60099) 2017-04-01 odtig2_0055 & odtvg2_0055 (60100-61199) 2017-04-01 odtig2_0056 & odtvg2_0056 (61200-62299) 2017-04-01 odtig2_0057 & odtvg2_0057 (62300-63399) 2017-04-01 odtig2_0058 & odtvg2_0058 (63400-64499) 2017-04-01 Calibration algorithm updated to Version 5.2 for all IR-RDR QUBEs The CALIB/PROCESS_IR document, version 0.22, has been updated to describe the current infrared calibration routine CAL_IR_IMAGE v5.2. The algorithm modification occurs after calibration, during the process of translating the calibrated radiance to scaled integer values for storage in the PDS SPECTRAL_QUBE files. In previous calibration versions, a poorly chosen rounding function was used that could result in minor feature-dependent errors. THEMIS analysis indicates that when this scaled calibrated radiance is unscaled and translated to brightness temperatures, these errors are near the limits of the THEMIS temperature resolution, and change the average image temperatue by about 0.016 Kelvin. 2017-07-01 Modified file format for IR-PBT & VIS-ALB Starting with release_id=0060 (orbit 65600), all projected PDS IMAGE products (IR-PBT and VIS-ALB) will include two important modifications to the previous version of the file format. These are fully described in the DOCUMENT/GEOMETRY text. First, the data will no longer be stored as scaled integers, but rather it will be stored as real (4-byte) floating point values; linear scaling keywords are still listed in the label, but they are set to OFFSET=0.0 and SCALING_FACTOR=1.0 as unscaling is not requried before using the data. Second, the attached label includes the full IMAGE_MAP_PROJECTION object which describes all aspects of the projection; this allows users to easily translate the PDS IMAGE file into their favorite projected file format with standard software packages, like GDAL (http://gdal.org). The above format changes have been applied and re-released in all of the PBT.IMG and ALB.IMG files available in the following ODTGEO_v2 volumes (orbit ranges are given for convenience): TBD ALB: odtva2_0048-odtva2_0051 (52300-56799) 2017-09-01 ALB: odtva2_0052-odtva2_0059 (56800-65599) 2017-07-01 ALB: odtva2_0060 (65600-66699) 2017-11-03 PBT: odtip2_0048-odtip2_0050 (52300-55599) 2017-07-01 PBT: odtip2_0051-odtip2_0059 (55600-65599) 2017-07-01 PBT: odtip2_0060 (65600-66699) 2017-07-01 Clarification to IR-BTR processing description Section 2.2.11 of the CALIB/PROCESS_IR document (version 0.23) which describes the IR-BTR (Brightness Temperature) processing has been updated to include a description of the final steps used to prepare the data for storage in scaled integer format (2-byte) PDS IMAGE file. Note that these steps have always been employed during the production of the IR-BTR products, and there is no change to the algorithms used to convert calibrated radiance to brightness temperature. The clarification was added because these steps are not necessary when creating the real format (4-byte) IR-PBT products (see previous entry) and users may see a differnce between the recorded maximum temperatures when comparing these products from the same observation. 2017-11-03 Correction of missing keywords from some IR-EDRs in RELEASE_ID 0050 Similar to the errata described above (2016-02-01), three IR-EDRs were discovered to be missing label keywords related to spacecraft orientation. The labels were corrected and replaced in the archive; the correction was made without affecting the data, so no errata will be released. The IR-EDRs images are I55005027, I55032015, and I55414002. 2017-11-03 IR Products Removed During Reprocessing During the reprocessing efforts described in ERRATA_ID ODTIR-0048-1.1 and ODTIR-0049-1.1, several previously released IR-RDR products were discovered to have been inappropriately generated with corrupt calibration sources. These products, and their derived temperature and projected products, have been removed from the archive. The following images are now only available as IR-EDR products: RELEASE_ID= 0048: I52545009, I52650006, I52904007, I52918003, I53085014 I53250002, R53085013 RELEASE_ID= 0049: I53636002, I53678007, I53682012, R53898006 2018-01-01 Update the THEMIS data publication schedule Throughout the first 15 years of the 2001 Mars Odyssey mission, THEMIS data has been published to the PDS approximately six months after ground receipt of the last raw data within each three month data acquisition period. However, in late 2017 it has come to the attention of the THEMIS operations team that improved accuracy in the geographical location of THEMIS images can be achieved using the appropriate NAIF SPICE SCL-Kernel. These files are typically available multiple weeks after the original ground receipt of the corresponding images. To accommodate the NAIF delivery schedule of these requried files, starting with RELEASE_ID=0062 (2017-01-01), new THEMIS data will be published to the PDS approximately seven months after ground receipt of the last raw data in the three month acquisition period. The outline of this schedule has been updated in Section 4 of the DOCUMENT/ARCHSIS. The predicted publication schedule for 2018 will be Release_Date Release_ID Orbit_Range UTC_Collection_Range 2018-01-01 0062 67800-68699 2017-03-27 to 2017-06-09 2018-04-01 0063 68700-69799 2017-06-09 to 2017-09-01 2018-07-01 0064 69800-70899 2017-09-01 to 2017-12-01 2018-10-01 0065 70900-71999 2017-12-01 to 2018-03-01 2018-04-01 IR-GEO cube BAND_STORAGE_TYPE format change starting RELEASE_ID=0063 The BAND_STORAGE_TYPE of ISIS3 multispectral cubes can be organized either in TILE format or in BAND_SEQUENTIAL format; both formats have been used in published THEMIS ODTGEO_v2 IR_GEO products. Starting in RELEASE_ID=0063 (orbit 68700), the THEMIS team has decided to simplify the archive and only publish IR-GEO products in the BAND_STORAGE_TYPE = BAND_SEQUENTIAL format. Previously release products will be reformatted using the ISIS3 function cubeatt, which does not otherwise modify the image data; the products will be tagged with the appropriate ERRATA version control and will be released on the following schedule: Release_Date ERRATA_ID Orbit_Range 2018-11-01 ODTIG-0048-2.2 52300-53399 2018-11-01 ODTIG-0049-2.2 53400-54499 2018-11-01 ODTIG-0050-2.2 54500-55599 2018-11-01 ODTIG-0051-2.2 55600-56799 2018-08-15 ODTIG-0052-2.1 56800-57899 2018-08-15 ODTIG-0053-2.1 57900-58999 2018-08-15 ODTIG-0054-2.1 59000-60099 2018-08-15 ODTIG-0055-2.1 60100-61199 2018-07-01 ODTIG-0056-2.1 61200-62299 2018-07-01 ODTIG-0057-2.1 62300-63399 2018-04-01 ODTIG-0058-2.1 63400-64499 2018-07-01 ODTIG-0059-2.1 64500-65599 2018-04-01 ODTIG-0060-2.1 65600-66699 2018-07-01 ODTIG-0061-2.1 66700-67799 2018-04-01 ODTIG-0062-2.1 67800-68699 2018-07-01 Correction to header keyword values The header keyword values for DESCRIPTION, SPACECRAFT_ORIENTATION, and SPACECRAFT_POINTING_MODE have been corrected for all products of the following observations: R68746025 I68746026 V68746027 S68746028 R68762001 I68762002 V68762003 S68762004 For the non-projected products (EDR, RDR, ABR, BTR), the header keyword values were updated without affecting the data; therefore, no errata has been issued, neither have the product creation nor version values been updated. The header corrections for the projected products (GEO-SNU, GEO-EQR, IR-PBT) could not easily be made without completely regenerating the product; therefore, erratas ODTIG-0063-2.1, ODTIP-0063-2.1, and ODTVG-0063-2.1 have been issued to track this change (see Section-A). However, in all cases, the geometry and data values were correct as originally published; only the identified keyword values were inappropriate. 2018-07-01 Correction to GEOMETRY_QUALITY history object Approximately 169 IR-RDR in RELEASE_ID=0051, 60 IR-RDR in RELEASE_ID=0054, 215 IR-RDR in RELEASE_ID=0056, 765 IR-RDR in RELEASE_ID=0059, and their corresponding IR-GEO products, were discoverd to have incorrect GEOMETRY_QUALITY history values. In all cases, the published data and geometry values were correct, however the quality rating was inappropriate (usually too low) for the accuracy of the projection. For the IR-RDR products, the header history object was updated without affecting the data, therefore, no errata has been issued. The revised GEOMETRY_QUALITY history DATE_TIME parameter value is in mid 2018, compared to the original DATE_TIME parameter value in early 2017. The same GEOMETRY_QUALITY history object is available in the IR-GEO label, however all of these files were also simultaneously revised for BAND_STORAGE_TYPE format and are tagged with the appropriate errata (see Section-A). 2018-07-01 VIS-GEO FEATHER version 2018.04 and 2018.05 A bug in the VIS-GEO post-projection FEATHER algorithm was identified and corrected, and the version identifier was rolled to 2018.04 or 2018.05. The first use of the revised FEATHER algorithm is in Release_id 0064 orbits 69800-70899); VIS-GEO products generated with earlier versions of the algorithm will be reprocessed on a timeline to be determined. It should be noted that while the bug adversely affected the appearance of the VIS-GEO images, the algorithm is executed after the full ISIS-v3 projection processing and therefore all of the geometric parameters originally calculated for the images are accurate. 2019-04-01 GEOMETRY_QUALITY history objects not available in RELEASE_ID=0066 products The GEOMETRY_QUALITY history object is not available in the IR-RDR, VIS-RDR, IR-GEO, or VIS-GEO products. All published data and geometry values are available in the products, only the quality assesment is incomplete. The quality rating will be completed and added to the products, and the products will be updated as soon as possible. 2019-05-01 GEOMETRY_QUALITY history objects available in RELEASE_ID=0066 products The GEOMETRY_QUALITY history object are now available in the IR-RDR, VIS-RDR, IR-GEO, or VIS-GEO products. For all products, the update was applied to the header or label without affecting the data, therefore no errata has been issued, neither have the product creation nor version values been changed. 2019-10-01 GEOMETRY_QUALITY history objects not available in RELEASE_ID=0069 products The GEOMETRY_QUALITY history object is not available in the IR-RDR, VIS-RDR, IR-GEO, or VIS-GEO products. All published data and geometry values are available in the products, only the quality assesment is incomplete. The quality rating will be completed and added to the products, and the products will be updated as soon as possible. 2020-01-01: GEOMETRY_QUALITY history objects also not available in RELEASE_ID=0070 products 2020-04-01: GEOMETRY_QUALITY history objects also not available in RELEASE_ID=0071 products 2020-07-01 Revised GEOMETRY_QUALITY history objects resume in RELEASE_ID=0072; Updated documentation: GEOMETRY.pdf and ODY_ORIENT_POINT.txt The GEOMETRY_QUALITY history object are now available in the IR-RDR, VIS-RDR, IR-GEO, or VIS-GEO products for past RELEASE_IDs 0069, 0070, and 0071 and also new RELEASE_ID=0072. For all products, the update was applied to the header or label without affecting the data, therefore no errata has been issued, neither have the product creation nor version values been changed. The revised GEOMETRY_QUALITY history object includes several new parameter keywords which characterize the spacecraft attitude stability. See GEOMETRY.pdf, Appendix 8 for a full discussion of the new parameters and how spacecraft attitude stability impacts THEMIS image collection. Additional information about spacecraft attitude is available in the revised ODY_ORIENT_POINT.txt file.
